GMC Sierra 1500 research: recalls, reliability and buyer's guide
The Sierra 1500 is GMC's more upscale take on GM's full-size pickup. Most trucks have a 5.3L V8; the 6.2L V8 is the strongest gas engine, the 2.7L turbo four (2019-on) is the efficient choice, and the 3.0L Duramax diesel (2020-on) is the highway-mileage and towing pick. The 2019 redesign brought the MultiPro tailgate and AT4, and the 2022 refresh a much nicer interior, Denali Ultimate, AT4X and Super Cruise.
Model years covered: 2011–2026. The Sierra 1500 is in production; verify 2026 engines (including Duramax availability), trims and specifications against current GMC data and the window sticker. 2019 and 2022 include 'Sierra 1500 Limited' carryover trucks.

Generations
Generation 2 (2007–2013)
The GMT900 Sierra 1500 (2007-2013; 2011-2013 in this file) offered a 195-hp 4.3L V6 and 302-hp 4.8L V8 with a 4-speed automatic, a 315-hp 5.3L V8 and 403-hp 6.2L V8 with a 6-speed, and a 6.0L two-mode Hybrid, in regular, extended and crew cab form.
Buyer takeaway: An affordable, simple truck; choose a 5.3L with the 6-speed and check oil consumption and rust.
Generation 3 (2014–2018)
The K2XX Sierra 1500 (2014-2018, plus the 2019 Sierra 1500 Limited) introduced direct-injected EcoTec3 engines: a 285-hp 4.3L V6, 355-hp 5.3L V8 and 420-hp 6.2L V8. The 6.2L got an 8-speed for 2015 and some 5.3L trucks for 2017; the 2016 refresh updated the front end and added smartphone integration on some radios.
Buyer takeaway: A strong value; a 2016-2018 5.3L or 6.2L SLT/Denali is the sweet spot. Test 8-speed trucks for shudder and listen for lifter noise.
Generation 4 (2019–present)
The T1XX Sierra 1500 (2019-on) is lighter, with the MultiPro tailgate, available CarbonPro bed and the AT4. Engines include the 2.7L turbo four, 5.3L and 6.2L V8s, a 3.0L Duramax (2020-on, 305 hp from 2023) and the 4.3L V6 through 2021, with 6-, 8- or 10-speed automatics. The 2022 refresh added a new interior, AT4X, Denali Ultimate and Super Cruise.
Buyer takeaway: Choose 2022-on for the upgraded interior and tech. On 2021-2024 6.2L trucks, confirm the engine recall remedy by VIN.

Known issues and what to check
- 6.2L V8 Engine Recall (25V274) (2021–2024)
In April 2025 GM recalled 2021-2024 full-size trucks and SUVs with the 6.2L V8, including the Sierra 1500 (NHTSA 25V274), because connecting-rod or crankshaft manufacturing defects can lead to engine damage and failure. Only 6.2L trucks are affected.
What to do: On any 2021-2024 6.2L Sierra, confirm with GMC that the recall inspection or repair was completed. - V8 Lifter Failures with Cylinder Deactivation (2014–2026)
The 5.3L and 6.2L V8s use Active Fuel Management (2014-2018) or Dynamic Fuel Management (2019-on) to shut off cylinders. Owners and repair shops report collapsed or stuck lifters on some engines, causing a tick, misfire and potential camshaft damage. It does not affect every truck.
What to do: Listen for ticking and scan for misfire codes; a documented lifter repair with records is acceptable. - 8-Speed Automatic Shudder (2015–2022)
Trucks with GM's 8-speed automatic (6.2L from 2015, some 5.3L from 2017, and the 2.7L turbo) have a widely reported torque-converter shudder or harsh shifts. GM service guidance commonly calls for a transmission fluid exchange with updated fluid; some trucks need further repair.
What to do: Test drive at light throttle between about 25 and 50 mph; ask whether the fluid exchange was done. - 5.3L V8 Oil Consumption (2011-2013) (2011–2013)
Some 2011-2013 5.3L V8s with Active Fuel Management are reported to burn oil, linked to piston rings and the AFM system, which can foul spark plugs.
What to do: Check the oil level and ask how often oil is added. - 3.0L Duramax Diesel Emissions and Belt Service (2020–2026)
The 3.0L Duramax uses diesel exhaust fluid and a particulate filter, and its oil pump is driven by a belt that GM schedules for replacement at high mileage. Short-trip driving can clog the filter.
What to do: On a diesel, scan for emissions codes and review service records against GM's schedule. - Frame, Brake Line and Underbody Rust Check (2011–2026)
Trucks used in snow-belt states or for launching boats can develop frame, brake-line and rocker rust. Older Sierras in particular should be checked underneath.
What to do: Look underneath, especially on 2011-2018 trucks from salt states. - Sierra 1500, Sierra 1500 Limited and Configuration Disambiguation (2011–2026)
The Sierra 1500 spans three generations here (2011-2013, 2014-2018, 2019-on). 'Sierra 1500 Limited' was the previous design sold as a 2019 and early 2022 truck. Engines, transmissions, cab, bed, axle ratio and drivetrain change capability; the Sierra 2500HD/3500HD are different trucks, and the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is the close sibling.
What to do: Resolve the exact configuration before comparing price or towing.
Recalls
Recall applicability varies by model year, production date, engine, transmission, equipment, and VIN. Check the VIN for current open recalls and completed remedies. For 2021-2024 6.2L V8 trucks, confirm the 25V274 engine recall remedy.
