Kia K5 research: recalls, reliability and buyer's guide
The K5 is a stylish, well-equipped midsize sedan with a low, fastback look and available all-wheel drive. 2021-2024 models use a 180-hp 1.6L turbo rated up to about 32 mpg combined; the 2025 refresh switched to a 191-hp 2.5L non-turbo engine and updated styling. The GT has a 290-hp turbo engine and a quick-shifting dual-clutch transmission. Check recalls by VIN, especially on 2021-2023 GTs.
Model years covered: 2021–2026. 2026 is a carryover of the refreshed 2025 model; verify 2026 trims, equipment and pricing against current Kia data.

Generations
Generation 1 (2021–present)
The first U.S. K5 launched for 2021 on a new platform shared with the Hyundai Sonata. 2021-2024 cars use a 180-hp 1.6L turbo with an 8-speed automatic and available AWD, or the 290-hp 2.5L turbo GT with an 8-speed wet dual-clutch. The base LX was dropped for 2023. The 2025 refresh brought new styling, an updated cabin and a 191-hp 2.5L non-turbo engine in place of the 1.6T.
Buyer takeaway: For value, a 2021-2024 1.6T (LXS, GT-Line or EX) is a strong buy; for the latest styling and a simpler non-turbo engine, choose 2025-2026. Pick an AWD GT-Line for snowy climates and a GT for performance, confirming the dual-clutch recall on 2021-2023 GTs.

A 2024 can be a good value versus the refreshed 2025 if priced to match.

Known issues and what to check
- GT Dual-Clutch Transmission Electric Oil Pump Recall (2021–2023)
Kia recalled certain 2021-2023 K5 GT models with the 2.5L turbo and 8-speed dual-clutch transmission built from November 16, 2020 through August 12, 2022 (NHTSA recall 22V-760, about 69,000 cars). The transmission's electric oil pump could fail; the car may warn the driver, run normally for 20-30 seconds, and then lose drive power. The remedy is a dealer inspection, a software update and transmission replacement if needed.
What to do: On a 2021-2023 K5 GT, confirm the recall was completed before buying. - Anti-Theft Software Upgrade (Turn-Key Ignition Models) (2021–2022)
Kia offered a free anti-theft software upgrade for 2021-2022 K5 models with a traditional turn-key ignition (no push-button start) after a wave of thefts targeting cars without an engine immobilizer. The update extends the alarm and requires the key fob to unlock the car before it can be started. Eligibility depends on the vehicle's ignition type and VIN.
What to do: If the car has a turn-key ignition, confirm the free anti-theft software upgrade was done (a Kia dealer can install it) and check your insurer's requirements. - GT 8-Speed Wet Dual-Clutch Operation (2021–2026)
The K5 GT uses an 8-speed wet dual-clutch transmission instead of the conventional automatic in other K5s. Dual-clutch gearboxes can feel different at very low speeds (slight hesitation or clutch-like engagement), so test stop-and-go driving and parking maneuvers on a GT.
What to do: Drive a K5 GT in stop-and-go conditions before buying, and confirm all recall work. - 1.6L Turbo Maintenance and Oil Level (2021–2024)
The 2021-2024 K5's 180-hp 1.6L turbo is a small, direct-injected turbo engine. Like other turbo engines it benefits from on-time oil changes with the correct oil, and owners should watch the oil level between changes.
What to do: Favor cars with documented, on-time oil changes. - All-Wheel-Drive System and Tire Matching (2021–2026)
AWD K5s (1.6T trims for 2021-2024, the 2.5L GT-Line from 2025) need four matching tires; mismatched tread depth can strain the AWD coupling.
What to do: On an AWD K5, check that all four tires match. - 2025 Powertrain Change: 1.6 Turbo vs. 2.5 Non-Turbo (2021–2026)
The K5 changed engines for 2025. 2021-2024 mainstream trims use a 180-hp 1.6L turbo; 2025-2026 mainstream trims use a 191-hp 2.5L without a turbo. Every GT uses the 290-hp 2.5L turbo with a dual-clutch. Listings sometimes mix these up, so confirm the engine by VIN.
What to do: Confirm the year, trim, engine and drivetrain before comparing prices.
Recalls
Recall applicability varies by model year, production date, engine, transmission, equipment, and VIN. Check the VIN for current open recalls, service campaigns, and completed remedies. For 2021-2023 K5 GT models, confirm the dual-clutch oil-pump recall (22V-760); for 2021-2022 turn-key models, confirm the anti-theft software upgrade.
