Kia Sportage research: recalls, reliability and buyer's guide
The Sportage is Kia's compact SUV. Older models (2011-2022) offer a 2.4L four or a quick 2.0L turbo on the SX. The 2023 redesign made it much roomier and added a Hybrid (about 38-43 mpg) and a Plug-in Hybrid with roughly 33-34 electric miles. 2011-2019 GDI engines are covered by Kia's engine settlement, and several fire-risk recalls should be confirmed by VIN.
Model years covered: 2011–2026. 2026 is the refreshed fifth-generation Sportage; verify 2026 trims, equipment and hybrid ratings against current Kia and EPA data. 2027 models are outside this window.

Generations
Generation 3 (2011–2016)
The third-generation Sportage (2011-2016) brought sharp styling and a 2.4L four (about 176 hp, 182 hp after the 2014 refresh), plus a 260-hp, 269 lb-ft 2.0L turbo on the SX. A 6-speed automatic is standard, with a 6-speed manual on early base models; FWD or AWD.
Buyer takeaway: Affordable and stylish, but these are older cars with engine recalls, settlement coverage and ABS-module fuse recalls to verify. A 2014-2016 has the refresh improvements; the SX turbo is quick but costs more to run.
Generation 4 (2017–2022)
The fourth-generation Sportage (2017-2022) uses a 181-hp, 175 lb-ft 2.4L GDI or the SX Turbo's 240-hp, 260 lb-ft 2.0L turbo, both with a 6-speed automatic and FWD or AWD. The 2020 refresh updated styling and made an 8-inch touchscreen standard.
Buyer takeaway: A 2020-2022 offers the refreshed tech; 2017-2019 GDI engines fall under Kia's engine settlement, so confirm the knock-sensor update. Check the HECU and tow-hitch recalls.
Generation 5 (2023–present)
The fifth-generation Sportage (2023-present) is about 7 inches longer, with a curved dual-screen dash. It offers a 187-hp 2.5L with an 8-speed automatic, a 227-hp Hybrid and a 261-hp AWD Plug-in Hybrid (both 1.6L turbo with a 6-speed automatic), plus X-Pro off-road trims. A 2026 refresh updated styling and standard tech.
Buyer takeaway: The Hybrid is the sweet spot for most buyers (quicker and far more efficient than the gas 2.5L). Confirm 2023 first-year recalls are complete.

Known issues and what to check
- Engine Recalls and Kia GDI Engine Settlement (2011-2019) (2011–2019)
Several engine actions cover older Sportages: recall 17V224 (2011-2013, engine bearing wear from machining debris; inspect and replace engine as needed), recall 20V750 (certain 2012 models, engine-fire inspection and knock-sensor software), and Kia's engine class settlement for 2011-2019 Sportages with 2.0L or 2.4L GDI engines, which provides a lifetime engine warranty once the Knock Sensor Detection System update is installed.
What to do: Confirm recall work and the KSDS update, and ask for oil-change and any engine replacement records. - ABS Module (HECU) Fire-Risk Recalls (23V652, 22V051, 21V137) (2011–2021)
Three recalls address possible short circuits in the anti-lock brake hydraulic electronic control unit that could cause an engine-compartment fire, with park-outside advice until repaired: 23V652 (certain 2010-2013), 22V051 (2014-2016) and 21V137 (2017-2021). Dealers install new fuses, plus software on cars with an electronic parking brake.
What to do: Confirm the HECU recall for the car's year is complete before purchase. - Tow Hitch Harness Fire-Risk Recall (22V703) (2017–2022)
Certain 2017-2022 Sportages with a tow hitch harness were recalled (Kia SC249) because moisture and debris on the module's circuit board could short and start a fire. Owners were told to park outside until repaired.
What to do: Confirm the hitch-harness repair on hitch-equipped Sportages. - 2023 First-Year Recalls (Oil Pump, Brake Booster and Others) (2023–2024)
The first fifth-generation Sportages had several recalls, including 23V531 (Idle Stop & Go electric oil pump controller can overheat; park outside until repaired), 23V410 (brake booster diaphragm can misalign and reduce power assist), 22V651 (alternator terminal nut may loosen), 22V878 (side curtain airbags) and 24V025 (roof molding may detach on 2023-2024).
What to do: Run the VIN and confirm every open campaign is closed on a 2023 or early 2024 Sportage. - AWD System and Tire Matching (2011–2026)
AWD Sportages use an electronically controlled coupling that sends power rearward as needed. Mismatched tire sizes or uneven wear can strain it, and X-Pro models use all-terrain tires with different wear and noise.
What to do: Make sure all four tires match and test AWD behavior on the drive. - Gas, Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid Resolution (2023–2026)
2023-and-later Sportages come as a 187-hp 2.5L gas model (8-speed automatic), a 227-hp 1.6L turbo Hybrid (about 38-43 mpg) or a 261-hp AWD Plug-in Hybrid with about 33-34 miles of electric range. Specs, maintenance, recalls and value differ by powertrain.
What to do: Confirm the exact powertrain; on a Plug-in Hybrid, check charging equipment and electric range. - Turbo SX vs 2.4L Resolution (2011-2022) (2011–2022)
Through 2022 the Sportage offered a turbocharged 2.0L on the top SX trim: 260 hp in 2011-2016 and 240 hp in 2017-2022. Other trims use a 2.4L four. Performance, fuel economy and value differ markedly.
What to do: Confirm the engine before comparing prices.
Recalls
Recall applicability varies by model year, production date, engine, equipment and VIN. Check the VIN for open recalls and completed remedies; for 2011-2019 GDI engines also confirm the knock-sensor software update.
