Scion xD research: recalls, reliability and buyer's guide
The xD is a small, simple, practical hatchback with a tall roofline, a sliding rear seat and a stronger 1.8L engine than many rivals. Every 2011-2014 car has the same 128-hp four with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic, rated about 27/33 mpg, and stability control is standard. It ended after 2014, so buy on condition and maintenance history.
Model years covered: 2011–2014. This file covers the 2011-2014 model years; the xD was also sold for 2008-2010 (same 1.8L powertrain, outside the 2011-2026 window). 2014 was the final model year, though leftover new cars sold into 2016.

Generations
Generation 1 (2008–2014)
The xD replaced the xA for 2008, based on the second-generation Toyota ist, with a 128-hp 1.8L four and a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. Stability control became standard for 2010, the 2011 car got a revised grille, 2012 brought standard Bluetooth audio streaming, and the 2014 final year offered a 10 Series edition. Leftover new units sold into 2016. This file covers 2011-2014.
Buyer takeaway: A practical, inexpensive first car or city runabout. Model years differ little, so choose by mileage, condition and records; manual cars are more engaging, automatics more common.
Scion xD by model year
2014 Scion xD
The 2014 xD is the final model year, with a limited 10 Series edition for Scion's 10th anniversary. It keeps the 128-hp 1.8L four, 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic and about 27/33 mpg. Leftover new 2014s were still being sold into 2016, so the first sale date can be later than usual; confirm warranty start and title history.
- Engines: 1.8 liter I4 128 hp 125 lb ft
- Transmissions: 5 speed manual; 4 speed automatic
- Drivetrain: Front wheel drive
- Body style: 5 door hatchback

What to inspect: Open recalls by VIN; Manual or automatic resolution by VIN; Automatic transmission shift quality; Clutch engagement if manual; Coolant leaks at water pump; Oil level and oil change records; Suspension and tires; Air conditioning operation; Rust in snow belt states; Maintenance history; First sale date and title history.
2013 Scion xD
The 2013 xD again carries over the 128-hp 1.8L four, 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic and roughly 27/33 mpg. Its 1.8L gives it more pulling power than many 1.5L subcompacts of the time. With few year-to-year changes, choose a 2012-2014 xD based on mileage, condition and maintenance records.
- Engines: 1.8 liter I4 128 hp 125 lb ft
- Transmissions: 5 speed manual; 4 speed automatic
- Drivetrain: Front wheel drive
- Body style: 5 door hatchback
What changed:

2012 Scion xD
For 2012 the xD gained a new standard Pioneer stereo with HD Radio and Bluetooth audio streaming, with an optional premium unit adding a 5.8-inch touchscreen and Pandora access. The 128-hp 1.8L four, 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic and about 27/33 mpg carry over, along with the sliding, reclining rear seat. 2012-2014 cars are the better-connected xDs.

2011 Scion xD
The 2011 xD is a small five-door hatchback with a 128-hp, 125 lb-ft 1.8L four and a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic, rated about 27/33 mpg city/highway. It received a minor grille change, and stability control remains standard. It is roomier inside than its size suggests, with a sliding, reclining rear seat, and is a simple, low-cost Toyota-engineered runabout.
- Engines: 1.8 liter I4 128 hp 125 lb ft
- Transmissions: 5 speed manual; 4 speed automatic
- Drivetrain: Front wheel drive
- Body style: 5 door hatchback

Known issues and what to check
- Four-Speed Automatic Shift Quality (2011–2014)
Most xDs have a 4-speed automatic. It is a simple design, but older, high-mileage units with neglected fluid can slip or shift harshly, and with only four gears the engine revs fairly high at highway speed.
What to do: Road test through all gears, including a highway run. - Water Pump and Cooling System Wear (2011–2014)
Water pumps on aging Toyota 1.8L engines can seep coolant. Look for dried residue near the pump, a falling coolant level or a sweet smell after driving.
What to do: Check the coolant level and look for leaks around the water pump. - Age-Related Wear on a 10-Plus-Year-Old Car (2011–2014)
Every xD is now more than ten years old. Suspension struts and bushings, air conditioning, tires, exhaust and rust in snow-belt states are the usual age items; service records matter more than mileage alone.
What to do: Have an independent pre-purchase inspection on any high-mileage xD. - Oil Level and Maintenance History (2011–2014)
The 1.8L four is a widely used Toyota engine with a timing chain rather than a belt. Regular oil changes keep the chain and variable valve timing healthy; low oil or long gaps between changes deserve a closer look.
What to do: Ask for oil-change records and check the dipstick. - Late First-Sale Dates on 2014 Models (2014)
Although 2014 was the last xD model year, leftover new cars were sold into 2016. Such a car may have been registered later than its model year suggests, which affects original warranty dates and vehicle history.
What to do: Use the VIN to confirm the model year and first sale date. - Scion Brand, Toyota Successor, and xD Identification (2011–2014)
The xD (2008-2014) replaced the Scion xA and was based on the Japanese-market Toyota ist. This file covers its 2011-2014 model years; 2008-2010 cars use the same 1.8L powertrain but are outside the 2011-2026 window. The xD had no Toyota-badged U.S. successor; the 2016 Scion iM was a larger compact hatchback, not a direct replacement.
What to do: Confirm the exact model year and transmission by VIN before comparing prices or specs; any Toyota dealer can service the car and perform recall work.
Recalls
Recall applicability varies by model year, production date, engine, transmission, equipment, and VIN. Check the VIN for current open recalls and completed remedies. Toyota dealers perform recall work on Scion vehicles.
