The Mahoning Valley
Northeast Ohio & Western Pennsylvania
Steel in its bones, grit in its people, and a comeback story still being written.
Stretching along the Mahoning River from Youngstown and Warren to the Pennsylvania line, the Mahoning Valley is one of America's great working-class communities. It's a place where neighbors still know each other, where Friday nights mean high school football, and where generations of families have built lives around hard work and looking out for one another. This August, Avunu is proud to shine a light on the Valley — its history, its traditions, and above all, its people.
A bit of history
The story of the Valley.
Forged in steel
For most of the twentieth century, the Mahoning Valley was one of the largest steel-producing regions on Earth. Mills like Youngstown Sheet & Tube, Republic Steel, and U.S. Steel lined the river for more than twenty miles, and the glow of the blast furnaces lit the night sky. Steel built the Valley's neighborhoods, its churches, its union halls — and a middle class that believed hard work would always be rewarded.
Black Monday and the years after
On September 19, 1977 — remembered here as Black Monday — Youngstown Sheet & Tube announced the closure of its Campbell Works, and the Valley lost tens of thousands of jobs in the years that followed. It was one of the hardest blows any American community has absorbed. But the Valley never quit. Families stayed, rebuilt, retrained, and held on to the traditions that made this place home.
A comeback still being written
Today the Valley is writing its next chapter: advanced manufacturing and electric-vehicle production in Lordstown, a growing healthcare and education economy anchored by Youngstown State University and the region's hospital systems, a revitalized downtown Youngstown, and the same Mill Creek Park — one of the largest urban park systems in the country — that has given Valley families a place to gather for over 130 years.
