Honda Accord research: recalls, reliability and buyer's guide
The Accord is one of the most popular midsize cars. 2011-2017 models offer a four-cylinder or a smooth V6, plus coupes. The 2018-2022 generation went turbocharged, with a 192-hp 1.5L, a quick 252-hp 2.0L and a Hybrid rated about 47-48 mpg. The 2023 and later Accord is roomier and more refined, offered as a 1.5L turbo or a roughly 204-hp hybrid on most trims. Older models need Takata airbag recall checks, and several years have fuel-pump recalls.
Model years covered: 2011–2026. The Accord remains in production; verify 2026 trims, equipment and any running changes against current Honda data.

Generations
Generation 8 (2008–2012)
The eighth-generation U.S. Accord (2008-2012) was large enough for the EPA to class the sedan as a full-size car. It offered a 2.4L four (177 hp, or 190 hp on EX and coupes) with a 5-speed automatic or manual, and a 271-hp 3.5L V6 with a 5-speed automatic or, on the coupe, a 6-speed manual. Sedan and coupe body styles were sold.
Buyer takeaway: A roomy, durable budget pick if Takata airbag recalls are complete and maintenance (including V6 timing belt service) is documented.
Generation 9 (2013–2017)
The ninth-generation Accord introduced a direct-injected 2.4L (185 hp, 189 hp Sport) with a CVT or 6-speed manual, and kept a 278-hp V6 with a 6-speed automatic or manual (coupe). The two-motor Accord Hybrid arrived for 2014 (196 hp) and returned for 2017 with 212 hp; a Plug-in Hybrid was sold for 2014. The 2016 refresh added Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and available Honda Sensing. The coupe and V6 ended after 2017.
Buyer takeaway: 2016-2017 models are the sweet spot for tech; the V6 is the pick for smooth power, and the Hybrid for mpg. Check the battery-sensor and, in salt states, driveshaft recalls.
Generation 10 (2018–2022)
The tenth-generation Accord was sedan-only and turbocharged: a 192-hp 1.5L with a CVT, a 252-hp 2.0L with a 10-speed automatic (both with a 6-speed manual on the Sport through 2020), and a 212-hp two-motor Hybrid. Honda Sensing was standard. The 2021 refresh brought new styling and standard smartphone integration and dropped the manual.
Buyer takeaway: The 2.0T is the enthusiast choice, the Hybrid the efficiency choice, and the 1.5T a good all-rounder. Check fuel-pump and software recalls by VIN.
Generation 11 (2023–present)
The eleventh-generation Accord is longer with a more upscale cabin. The 192-hp 1.5L turbo (CVT) powers LX and EX (SE from 2025), while Sport, EX-L, Sport-L and Touring use a two-motor hybrid of about 204 hp and 247 lb-ft. The Touring added Google built-in. 2026 brought a bigger screen on LX and SE and standard wireless phone projection.
Buyer takeaway: The hybrid trims are the best all-around choice for most buyers; the 1.5T LX/SE suits value shoppers. Check fuel-pump and seat recalls on 2023-2024 models.

Known issues and what to check
- Takata Airbag Inflator Recalls (2011-2012) (2011–2012)
2008-2012 Accords are covered by several Takata airbag inflator recalls. Over time and with heat and humidity, affected inflators can rupture in a crash and spray metal fragments. Honda has run multiple campaigns, so a car may need more than one repair.
What to do: Do not buy or drive a 2011-2012 Accord with an open airbag recall until it is repaired; the fix is free. - Fuel Pump Recalls (Various Years) (2015–2024)
Several Honda fuel pump recalls cover Accords: low-pressure in-tank pumps on many 2018-2020 models (and a broader campaign spanning 2013-2023 Honda models), 2015-2017 V6 Accords, and a high-pressure fuel pump that can leak on some 2023-2024 Accords and Accord Hybrids. A failed pump can cause stalling; a leak raises fire risk.
What to do: Confirm any fuel pump recall on the VIN is complete. - Battery Sensor Water Intrusion Recall (2013-2016) (2013–2016)
Honda recalled 2013-2016 Accords because the battery sensor case can let water in and short circuit, creating a fire risk.
What to do: Confirm the battery-sensor recall is complete. - Driveshaft Corrosion Recall, Salt States (2013-2015 CVT) (2013–2015)
2013-2015 four-cylinder CVT Accords sold or registered in road-salt states were recalled because the driveshafts were assembled with a lubricant that could degrade their protective coating, leading to corrosion and breakage. A broken driveshaft causes loss of drive and possible rollaway if the parking brake is not set.
What to do: Confirm the driveshaft recall on salt-state cars and set the parking brake when parked. - CVT and Turbo Engine Maintenance Check (2013–2026)
Most 2013 and later four-cylinder Accords use a CVT, and 2018 and later gas models use turbocharged engines. Both reward on-time fluid and oil changes. A test drive should confirm smooth, shudder-free acceleration, and the oil level should be correct and clean.
What to do: Favor Accords with documented oil and CVT fluid changes. - Body Control Module Software Recall (2018-2020) (2018–2020)
Honda recalled some 2018-2020 Accord sedans and Accord Hybrids for a software error that can disrupt communication between electronic systems, which can affect features such as the rearview camera, wipers, lights or instrument displays.
What to do: Confirm the software update was performed and test the camera and lights. - Generation, Body Style and Powertrain Disambiguation (2011–2026)
Accords from 2011-2017 came as sedans and coupes with 2.4L four or 3.5L V6 engines; 2018-2022 are sedans with 1.5L or 2.0L turbo engines or a hybrid; 2023 and later are sedans with a 1.5L turbo or hybrid. The Accord Crosstour (later called simply Crosstour, 2010-2015) is a separate hatchback model, and the Acura TSX was related to the European/Japanese Accord.
What to do: Confirm year, engine and body style before comparing prices.
Recalls
Recall applicability varies by model year, build date, engine, state of registration and VIN. Check the VIN for open recalls, especially Takata airbag recalls on 2011-2012 models.
